Inauguration Notes

Last night was fun. Our small group kind of does whatever it wants. I had an awesome prime rib at dinner last night, and we went to the ball for about 20 minutes before leaving to return to the club. The club is in the basement of the restaurant where we ate dinner. We beat the line by talking to the general manager (that we had met earlier in the night at dinner) and asking him if there was a way to beat the line. He took us around the building to the alley and let us in the back door. It was a cool experience. We did that only after chatting to the couple in front of us in the line though, and hearing them talk about "All the old, rich people involved with the governor who are all over our hotel." I mentioned that there were some young ones too, and they missed the hint. They were pretty embarrassed when we said we were part of that group.

Today we had mass with the local bishop and the extended family. It was a very nice service - there was a children's choir in charge of the music, and it was REALLY entertaining. There was even a soloist who did the response. He couldn't have been more than 5 years old, but he was really good.

After mass, we went through a brunch buffet at the hotel and then went to the governor's office for a reception/luncheon. We sat in an enormous conference room with a movie-screen-sized projection screen on the back wall. The Cowboys-Vikings were on, and then the Governor came in and circled the room talking to everyone (except me and the guy I was sitting with).

Dinner tonight is going to be a small affair at the governor's mansion, so hopefully we'll get some face time there.
